Japanese bookbinding is an ancient art that has experienced a recent surge in popularity among book and paper artists and crafters. In this class you’ll learn a little bit of history and context of the Japanese book binding tradition and where it fits in the context of bookbinding worldwide. We’ll practice multiple binding patterns and variations on each, beginning with basic “yamato toji” and “yotsumi toji” (2 and 4 hole bindings) and moving through more complex “kikko toji” (tortoise shell), “Asa-no-ha-toji” (hemp leaf) patterns. You’ll have time to explore and create in a relaxed environment and take home several unique, expressive, and functional books that can be used for journaling, writing, scrapbooking. You’ll also receive handouts with the techniques & materials we covered, plus a list of resources for further exploration and inspiration.
